The Impact of Investing in Military Families

A military kid returns home from Operation Purple® Camp with newfound confidence after a week spent stepping outside their comfort zone and discovering what they’re capable of.
A military spouse earns a professional license and lands a job they once thought was out of reach, thanks to the Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program.
A child in the middle of a PCS discovers they are not alone, building friendships and finding community through Operation Purple Summer Challenge.
What do these stories have in common?
At first glance, you might see individual successes. Look closer, and a common thread emerges: these are examples of what becomes possible when military families are given the support, opportunities, and connections they need to thrive. Talent, potential, and determination already exist throughout the military community. Sometimes, all that’s needed is the opportunity to unlock them.
Throughout the summer, NMFA will highlight the impact of these programs by the numbers across our social media channels. Each number represents a real person, a real family, and a story worth telling. Most importantly, these numbers will demonstrate the measurable impact of investing in military families and serve as a powerful reminder of what is possible when they have the support they need to thrive.
Creating Connection for Military Kids
Military-connected children often grow up adapting to challenges most of their civilian peers never experience. Frequent moves, family separations, and the realities of military service can make it difficult to build lasting friendships and a sense of belonging.
Operation Purple Camp creates a space where military kids can connect with peers who understand those experiences firsthand.
As Quincey Z., father of one camper, shared: “He came home from camp as a problem solver, a leader…”
Another parent, Sarah S., reflected that “OPC provided an opportunity for our kiddos to experience a situation that opened their world…”
For many military children, camp is more than a summer experience. It’s a place where they discover confidence, community, and the assurance that they are not alone.
Investing in Military Spouses
Military spouses are no strangers to starting over. A PCS can mean leaving behind a job, rebuilding professional networks, or putting educational goals on hold.
The Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program helps spouses continue pursuing those goals despite the challenges military life creates.
For one recipient, the scholarship provided the final step toward a career she had worked hard to achieve:
“With this scholarship, I was able to pay for my licensure exam to be a licensed social worker in Colorado. This has doubled my income, and I am now working as a postpartum mental health therapist, which is a dream come true!”
Another recipient shared:
“This funding changed my life by making it possible for me to complete my bachelor’s degree, something that once felt out of reach. It opened doors to a meaningful career where I can grow professionally and build long-term stability for myself and my family.” — Ferrari G., Military Spouse
Scholarships help recipients earn degrees, certifications, and licenses that lead to stronger careers, greater financial stability, and new opportunities, with ripple effects that extend far beyond the individual, strengthening families and communities alike.
Connection That Travels Wherever Military Life Leads
Military life rarely follows a predictable schedule. Moves, deployments, and changing schools can make it difficult for families to access traditional support systems, especially in summer.
Operation Purple Summer Challenge was designed with that reality in mind. As a free, virtual program available worldwide, it allows youth and families to participate wherever military life takes them.
Nikki, the parent of two participants, shared: “It helped both of my kids so much! Most notably, it helped them realize they aren’t alone in the struggles they face adjusting to life with a parent in the military.”
For families navigating a season of change, Operation Purple Summer Challenge offers more than activities. It offers community, encouragement, and the comfort of knowing others understand the unique realities of military life.
More Than Numbers
A child who finds confidence is better equipped to navigate military life and beyond. A spouse who earns a credential gains opportunity and stability. A family that finds community discovers they don’t have to navigate military life alone.
These stories may belong to individual families, but their impact extends much further. Strong military families strengthen their communities, support service members, and help ensure the long-term well-being of the military community.
That is the story behind the numbers, and it’s one worth telling.
