Your Summer Survival Guide: Top Apps for Military Families
From one military family to another, nothing says summer like families scrambling to fill the long days with activities and meaningful ways to connect. You’ll find us reaching out to our community and base installation for ideas and the latest events being hosted, but another great tool fits in the palm of your hand!
The world of apps available in the App Store and Google Play Store gives us access to everything from the latest news to trending games. But it also offers military families a handful of apps made just for us—apps that help keep summer organized and planned and even help save a few dollars!
Here are a few you should check out today:
- Libby, DOD MWR Libraries – Think of Libby as your personal library. Through the DOD MWR Libraries partnership, military families get free access to thousands of eBooks (including new releases and trending titles), audiobooks, and magazines. Bonus: It works anywhere, whether you’re spending the summer at home or completing a PCS!
- AllTrails – PCS moves often take us to places we know little about. Summer is a great time to explore your new surroundings. AllTrails is like having a personal tour guide for the great outdoors. Find kid-friendly hikes, stroller-friendly paths, or challenging trails for your competitive family members. Whether stationed in the mountains, the desert, or near the beach, this app helps you discover nature’s hidden gems right outside your gate.
- National Park Service – Did you know military families get free access to national parks, thanks to the America the Beautiful pass? Download the National Park Service app to plan your next park adventure and take full advantage. Get maps, tips, and insider info right from the app. You’ll find everything you need to turn your trip into an epic and well-curated family memory.
- My Military OneSource – You already know the Military OneSource website is a great resource and support source, but their app helps you stay connected on the go. The My Military OneSource app is like having a 24/7 military life coach in your pocket. You’ll always feel well-informed with current information, access to resources, and military life guides.
- Vet Tix – One of the best parts of summer? Concerts, baseball games, comedy shows, and festivals! You can use the Vet Tix website or the app to find free or deeply discounted tickets for military families to the many events near you. Keep an eye on local listings and surprise your family with a spontaneous night out.
Summer may fly by, but make the time for adventure, laughter, and connection. With some help from these apps, your family can turn this summer into an impressive social media highlight reel.
