Celebrate America’s 250th with A Capitol Fourth

Beat the Heat with a Capitol Fourth

For the last 45 years, the PBS A Capitol Fourth concert has been one of America’s favorite Independence Day traditions, bringing music, patriotism, and an unforgettable fireworks display to millions of viewers across the country. This year, the tradition continues with a few exciting twists, and NMFA had the opportunity to get an early look.

We’re proud to join a small group of military and veteran organizations invited to attend rehearsals ahead of the concert each year. It’s one of our favorite annual traditions because it gives us the chance to see the incredible work that goes into producing one of the nation’s most iconic July 4th celebrations while connecting with others who serve the military community.

This year, we definitely earned that sneak peek.

With temperatures climbing well above 100 degrees in Washington, D.C., performers, production crews, and guests pushed through the heat to prepare for what promises to be an incredible show. The weather may have been relentless, but so was the energy. Even during rehearsal, it was easy to see why this concert has remained a July Fourth staple for generations.

There is another reason this year’s celebration feels especially significant.

As America marks its 250th birthday, the concert is moving up one day and will air on Friday, July 3, ahead of the many Semiquincentennial events taking place across the Washington region throughout the holiday weekend. It’s a fitting way to kick off a historic celebration for our nation while honoring the people, traditions, and music that continue to bring Americans together.

Hosted once again by Alfonso Ribeiro, this year’s lineup spans generations and genres. Viewers can expect performances from Chicago, Trace Adkins, Patti LaBelle, Kool & The Gang, Carly Pearce, Alan Jackson, Loren Allred, Angel Blue, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Broadway cast of Just in Time. The program will also feature appearances by actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna, both longtime supporters of the military community.

Whether you’re a fan of country, rock, Broadway, opera, R&B, or classic hits, there’s something for everyone.

One of the biggest changes this year comes after the music ends.

Instead of the traditional fireworks display over the National Mall, the grand finale will launch from George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. It’s a meaningful tribute that connects the nation’s founding with one of its most cherished Independence Day traditions and offers viewers a fresh perspective on a celebration they’ve come to know and love.

For military families, the Fourth of July often carries some extra meaning. It’s a time to celebrate our country’s birthday while recognizing the service and sacrifice of those who continue to defend the freedoms we enjoy. Events like A Capitol Fourth offer an opportunity to pause, celebrate together, and reflect on what unites us, whether you’re gathered around the television in your hometown or tuning in from wherever military life has taken your military family.

If your crew is looking for a way to beat the heat this holiday weekend, we’ve got an easy suggestion. Turn up the air conditioning, grab your favorite snacks, gather everyone together, and enjoy one of America’s favorite traditions from the comfort of home.

A Capitol Fourth airs Friday, July 3, at 8 p.m. ET on your local PBS station and can also be streamed online!

From all of us at NMFA, we wish you a safe, happy, and memorable Independence Day.
