NDAA Update: Some Military Spouse Employment Provisions Included

NDAA INCLUDES MILITARY SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS

There was good news for military families in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (FY23 NDAA), including provisions on military spouse employment and student loan repayments during a PCS.

Remote and Telework

The bill expands the benefits under noncompetitive appointments of military spouses to include remote and telework. Congress is also requiring a study by the Comptroller General on remote work by Federal agencies.

Student loan deferment for Dislocated Military Spouses

Spouses who are unemployed because of a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move will be able to defer federal student loan debt for an aggregate period of 180 days without interest accrual.

Assistance for Military Spouses to Obtain Certifications as Doulas and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants

Spouses interested in becoming certified as a doula or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) will be eligible for reimbursement assistance if the training is provided by an organization that receives reimbursement under the extra medical maternal health providers demonstration project.
