National Military Family Association Event Highlights Issues Impacting Military Health Care

Annual Leadership event welcomed Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, Director of the Defense Health Agency as keynote speaker

April 20, 2018

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The National Military Family Association (NMFA), a nonprofit that works to strengthen military families, hosted its annual leadership event this week. This event, Homefront Health Care: Charging Towards Victory for America’s Heroes and Their Families, focused on the latest issues impacting the nation’s military service members and their families.

Emceed by WUSA9’s Emmy Award winning journalist, Andrea McCarren, the breakfast program featured distinguished speaker and Director of the Defense Health Agency, Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono.

Vice Admiral Bono spoke about the extensive changes happening within the military health care system, and how those changes will create a medically fit military force on our home front, and in battle.

“I believe that if we are trying to make change happen, we need to get a little uncomfortable. How else would we know if we are making it happen?” said Vice Admiral Bono as she outlined some of the many inefficiencies in military health care she’s working to address.

She talked about creating an integrated system of military readiness and health, and addressed the families in the audience directly, saying “We want you to be able to gain access to care when you need it.”

Admiral Bono went on to highlight one of NMFA’s driving messages on health care: service: members can’t focus on the mission at hand when their families at home aren’t take care of.

“Military members and their families serve our country selflessly, and with pride,” NMFA Executive Director Joyce Wessel Raezer explained. “They deserve the right to quality health care, and we are pleased that Admiral Bono, and the Defense Health Agency, are considering what military families value in their health care experience as they implement needed reforms. We applaud their commitment to ensuring our heroes and their families receive the highest level of health care possible.”

This year’s Leadership event was held with support from these Military Family Sponsors: Association of Military Banks of America, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, and ValueOptions Federal Services.
