Celebrate the Month of the Military Child with Sesame Street

At Sesame Workshop — the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street — we know that when a parent serves in the military, the whole family serves. That's why we created Sesame Street for Military Families, an initiative to help families cope and connect through the unique challenges of military life — now in its 12th year.

When we launched Sesame Street for Military Families in 2006, deployments were at some of their highest levels in decades, and existing resources for service members rarely addressed their families —especially their youngest children — holistically. So we got to work. We asked military parents about the questions their kids were asking, and we drew on our early childhood expertise and beloved Sesame Street Muppets to create fun, educational materials and programs to address those questions in honest and age-appropriate ways.

The Sesame Street for Military Families website includes insightful articles for parents and caregivers, coloring pages and digital games for kids, and live-action videos starring Elmo, Rosita, Abby Cadabby, and all their Sesame Street friends, tailored to meet the specific needs of military families. Free to families and community service providers, all the resources are available in English and Spanish. Topics include:

Challenging Transitions and Big Feelings
On top of the day-to-day challenges that all families face, military kids and families deal with a lot of change. Deployments, homecomings, and frequent relocations can provoke big feelings in children and adults alike. Our resources help military parents and kids establish comforting routines, reconnect after separations, get comfortable in new homes, and much more.

Staying Strong in Body and Mind
Newly-launched wellness resources can help military families stay physically and emotionally strong together. Articles for parents suggest ways for families to connect around self-expression, sharing feelings, and healthy physical activities. Games and videos for kids teach simple mindfulness and resilience techniques like belly breathing and positive self-talk. One of our favorites is Comfy Cozy Nest, a digital activity that lets children decorate Big Bird's nest — and helps them imagine a calm, safe place of their very.

Celebrating Birthdays Across the Miles
Birthdays are big days for children, and we know how difficult they can be for military kids when a family member is away, or when they're the “new kid” in town after a PCS. Our new birthday resources help families start new traditions, build anticipation for the big day, and create memorable birthday moments even when everyone can't be together.

This month and every month, Sesame Workshop is celebrating and supporting military kids and families everywhere! Visit us on Facebook to join in the fun, and find our resources on the Sesame Street for Military Families website.

Have you used any of the Sesame Street resources or seen the shows when they came to your installation? Tells us about it!

Operation Purple Camp

Eastern 4-H Center is owned and operated by NC State University. The Center's staff is dedicated to providing every camper an opportunity to feel accepted, valued, and cared about as a member of the summer camp community. Creating friendships and a sense of safety are as important to us as the activities we teach. Our vision is to establish an enjoyable and exciting summer camp program that contributes to the development of each camper's character, along with the development of important life skills. Our summer camp experience enables campers to learn these skills while doing a variety of traditional summer camp activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, learning about nature, team challenge course, sports and games, arts and crafts, and archery. Eastern 4-H Center is also outfitted with modern recreational facilities and lodgings to make campers feel comfortable during their stay. We hope your camper will join us for a fun filled week.
