Care From Civilian Providers
To have a robust network of care, the Department of Defense contracts with companies to build networks of civilian hospitals, clinics, and doctors to provide additional services to TRICARE beneficiaries and supplement the care provided in military hospitals and clinics. These companies, known as the Managed Care Support (MCS) contractors manage referrals to civilian providers, manage the TRICARE Prime enrollment process, and pay claims for care provided by civilian doctors and facilities. TRICARE support services are broken into TRICARE Regions within the United States and overseas.
The TRICARE Regions are: TRICARE North, TRICARE South, TRICARE West, and TRICARE Overseas (Europe, Latin America, Canada, and Pacific). You can find your region at www.tricare.mil. Your access to care directly links to your assigned TRICARE Region of care.
Health care services received using TRICARE civilian providers is an option for eligible beneficiaries, following the rules of the various TRICARE health care plans.
There are four TRICARE Regions managed by four separate Managed Care Support (MCS) contractors who oversee the civilian care (network) side of TRICARE: Health Net Federal Services, LLC (North); Humana Military Healthcare Services, Inc. (South); TriWest Healthcare Alliance Corp. (West); and International SOS Assistance, Inc. (Overseas). A new TRICARE MCS contract was recently awarded.
