TRICARE Young Adult
TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) allows eligible adult children to purchase TRICARE coverage after age 21 or 23 if enrolled in college. TYA provides medical and pharmacy benefits; however dental coverage is not included with the TYA benefit. In order to be eligible for TYA, an adult child must be:
- Unmarried;
- At least 21 but not yet 26 of age;
- Ineligible to enroll in an employer-sponsored health plan based on the adult child’s own employment; and
- Not otherwise eligible for other types of TRICARE coverage.
Beneficiaries need to know that TYA is an option for unmarried, adult children that have aged out of regular TRICARE coverage. TYA is a premium based plan and eligible beneficiaries may select either Prime or Standard coverage. Premiums are paid monthly and adjusted yearly. TYA eligible beneficiaries should review all health care insurance plan options (military or commercial) before deciding if TYA is the right plan.
