Short-Term Counseling and Assistance
At one end of the spectrum of the mental health services are preventive care and support programs offered by military installation family centers, military chaplains, and National Guard and Reserve member family program staff. On military installations, military families can access individual or family counseling in military hospitals or clinics and sometimes in their installation family centers.
Military families and service members also have the option of seeking free non-medical counseling from Military OneSource. In addition to offering 24/7 information and resources, Military OneSource can refer a service member or eligible family member to a licensed professional counselor in the local civilian community at no cost to the service member or family member. The Military OneSource face-to-face, phone, and online (Skype and chat) counseling benefit addresses non-medical, short-term concerns and is limited to 12 sessions per issue per person. These counseling sessions are problem-resolution-focused sessions dealing with adjustment issues, work life topics, and emotional well-being. Counseling offered through Military OneSource is not designed to address long-term issues. For more information call 1.800.342.9647.
TRICARE offers a “medical” based Internet videoconferencing. This is known as TRICARE’s telemental health care program. This program uses TRICARE mental health network (authorized) providers. To use telemental health care, you must schedule an appointment at a TRICARE network mental health provider’s office that has telemental health care access. The provider’s office staff connects you to the off-site provider via a webcam. You can check with your TRICARE Regional Managed Care Support Contractor on how to locate a participating telemental health care provider(s) in your area. This program is not available in all geographical areas.
