Three More States Join Compact
Nebraska, North Dakota, and Vermont became the 37th, 38th, and 39th states respectively to join the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. The National Military Family Association is thrilled that over 90% of our military children are now covered by this important legislation.
Our Association appreciates the efforts of all those who worked to make this a reality, from the Department of Defense (DoD) State Liaison Office, Service representatives, military families, state legislators, and the Governors themselves. Our Association remains dedicated to helping pass the Compact in the remaining states, territories, and the District of Columbia.
The Compact, which provides for the uniform treatment of military children transferring between school districts and states, is already working to alleviate many of the transition issues military children face when moving. It was developed by The Council of State Governments' National Center for Interstate Compacts, the Department of Defense, national associations to include the National Military Family Association, federal and state officials, the Department of Education of each state, school administrators, and military families.
Our Association serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission. As a member of the Training and Public Relations committee, we have helped create informational materials available on the Commission website. We urge families to learn more about the Compact and to remember to “take it with them” when they move this summer!
Until military families are relieved of the weight of war, we hope you will continue to contribute to their wellbeing.
