State Legislation Supports Military Families
Our Association realizes that many of the issues affecting military families do not have a federal component but instead reside at the state level. In recent years, we have been pleased by the increase in state sponsored legislation supporting military families. In this year alone, 62 bills have been enacted in the states. Seventeen of them have passed both chambers and have been sent to their respective governors for signature.
The Department of Defense State Liaison Office (DSLO) is still working 60 active bills in 27 states. Most notable among these are:
- Four additional states, West Virginia, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Vermont, have adopted the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children bringing the total states in the Compact to 39
- Ten states have signed into law bills ensuring deployment separation does not determine child custody decisions
- Seven states have signed into law bills improving the portability of occupational licenses for military spouses
- Nineteen states have signed into law bills improving the Absentee Voting process for service members and their families
Details of all state legislative activity across the ten (10) Key Issues can be found at www.USA4MILITARYFAMILIES.dod.mil.
Until military families are relieved of the weight of war, we hope you will continue to contribute to their wellbeing.
