Service Affiliated Aid Societies
The following Service organizations have scholarship programs to assist spouses and family members in their educational pursuits.
Army Emergency Relief (AER) Education Programs
The Spouse Education Assistance Program is a needs-based education assistance program that provides financial assistance to spouses and survivors pursuing education opportunities. Individuals whose employer pays for tuition will not receive tuition assistance from AER. However, they may apply for assistance for fees, supplies, or books. All Army spouses are eligible to apply for the Spouse Education Assistance Program regardless of their Soldier’s physical duty station. The application will be open after January 1.
Information on the Scholarship Education Assistance Program can be found at http://www.aerhq.org.
The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS)
The Spouse Tuition Aid Program (STAP) is open to spouses residing with their active duty service member stationed overseas. The program has been modified to a need-based no-interest loan. STAP no interest loans are available for part-time and full-time undergraduate and graduate studies. The 2009 STAP program offers significantly expanded eligibility with loans up to $3,000 per 12 month period. For more information, visit www.nmcrs.org/stap.html.
Air Force Aid Society
General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) provides partial tuition assistance for spouses of active duty Airmen or officers, who accompany members to overseas locations and will be attending college programs. The program provides tuition assistance at a rate of 50% of unmet tuition charged per course, with a maximum of $1,500 per academic year and a term maximum, which is calculated by dividing the annual maximum by the number of terms within the academic year. For more information, visit www.afas.org.
Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA)
The CGMA Supplemental Education Grant (SEG) offers financial assistance by reimbursing costs of up to $250 per year. This grant is available for most education expenses, but does not cover tuition expenses. This grant can also be used to pay for CLEP, SAT, and other study guides. CGMA also offers several education-related loans. The Coast Guard also allows spouses and federal Coast Guard employees the opportunity to take CLEP, DANTES, and other tests at no cost.
