Military Life? There’s An App for That!
There are so many logistical nightmares that accompany this awesome, crazy military life. Whether it’s maintaining a relationship during deployment, moving around over and over again, or trying to navigate parental duties when you’re solo, military families could use some life-hacks that are specific to our challenges and everyday life. Well guess what? There’s an app for that!
In fact, there are hundreds of apps out there that can help make our lives easier in thousands of ways. We decided to share six of them with you to help get you started!
It can be tough trying to stay connected when your service member is away--especially if they’re on the other side of the world! Sure, there are a ton of technologies out there to help close that emotional gap when you can’t close the physical one, but sometimes you just need a little bit more.
That’s where Couple comes in! To help you stay close while you’re miles apart and maintain an ‘intimate place for two,’ the Couple app provides a shared timeline that can be accessed anywhere at any time. Whether you’re using the app or the web version, Couple is designed to keep all of your moments private and help both of you to continue to make memories even when you can’t be together.
Our absolute favorite part of this app is the Thumb-kiss option. If you are both on the app at the same time and touch the ‘thumb key’, the phone will vibrate on both ends. It’s a virtual kiss in the digital world!
CertifiKID was the very first “deal” website geared specifically to families. The app is similar to Groupon, but specific to the family friendly experience. It initially concentrated solely in the National Capitol Region, but has since expanded to include other cities across the United States. Many of them in cities that are heavily populated with military families!
From activities and events to classes and camps, CertifiKID would be a great app for kids young and ‘seasoned.’
Available for both iOS and Android, the Sesame Street for Military Families app deals with the ins and outs of the more difficult aspects of military life, like divorce, transition, incarceration, and moving.
The app touts resources for preschool through school-aged children, and gives parents and caregivers support for their kids on topics such as deployment, homecoming, injuries, grief and self-expression. All aspects of the app are research-based and are available in English and Spanish. The app, and the features within it, come directly from the Sesame Street workshop and has a variety of activities, articles, parent guides, and more.
It’s never too early to start planning for transition, but if your service member’s separation or retirement is on the horizon, we highly suggest the Transition app from Military.com. There’s so much information given out during transition from military service, it can often be confusing to know what to do first and when—and that includes spouses. Aside from speaking to the Transition Assistance Program manager at your installation, this app would make a great addition to your transition battle plan.
Just enter your service member’s estimated separation date into the app to create a personalized transition plan. Try tackling this season of change with your spouse—make it a team effort! You can also track your progress with their interactive pre-separation checklist. It will even send task reminders (which will be great for my husband since he’s often scatterbrained).
PCS season is just around the corner, so this app would make a great addition to your PCS tool kit! The Like A Local app helps you find those cool and hidden spots in your new town. The app helps you to avoid all the tourist traps that we typically get hooked into when we move somewhere new. Everything you read and see on the app is created by the locals who live in that city and know exactly what they’re talking about. It even has real-time streaming to show you the places near you wherever you’re browsing. It’ll even tell you if they’re open!
At this time, the Like a Local app is only available in a handful of cities in the U.S. and a few big cities abroad, but many of these cities are heavily populated with military personnel and their families. And if you end up with accompanied orders overseas, you may have the opportunity to scope the area out like a local!
Speaking of moving, how many times have you tried to stay organized during PCS season and failed? Personally, I could have used this app every time we moved! Sortly is designed to help you stay organized and breathe easier by creating visual hierarchies of all your belongings in sub-folders within the app. It’s easy to use, and all you have to do is tap twice to add new items to your list. With QR labels and easy exporting capabilities, you can backup and sync your lists in the cloud for easy access anywhere!
Not only is this app great to stay organized, but it could be useful for any insurance claims you need to do in the future if you have items and serial numbers all in one place.
These are just a few of the many apps out there that can help us all navigate a bit easier in our military lives. Which apps work for you? Please tell us about them!
