Bringing “More Than a Spouse” to MilSpouse Fest 2017
If you follow NMFA, you know how we feel about military spouses—they’re the ones who hold it down on the homefront so our military can do its work. But spouses do so much more than that. They ARE so much more than that… which is the inspiration for our award winning #MoreThanASpouse campaign designed to encourage military spouses to set goals, network, and build a community of like-minded spouses.
For the last two years, MilitaryOneClick has taken its’ interactive military spouse event on the road to military communities across the country. MilSpouseFest was designed with many of the same goals as #MoreThanASpouse—to motivate military spouses to live their best lives with the support and motivation of their peers. As a new partner this year, NMFA presents a #MoreThanASpouse talk at each event.
“We are so excited to have NMFA providing advocacy education segments at the MilSpouseFest events to continue empowering military families,” said Jennifer Pilcher, Founder of MilitaryOneClick and emcee at MilSpouseFest. “Over the past 6 years, MilitaryOneClick and NMFA have formed an incredible partnership by teaming up with #stormthehill and many other projects to advocate on behalf of the military community”.
MilSpouseFest is free and it’s a blast—no lectures or PowerPoint presentations! Each segment focuses on a myriad of topics including life balance, employment, entrepreneurship, parenting and more. There are games and prizes, but more importantly… there are new friendships, perspectives and camaraderie.
NMFA’s #MoreThanASpouse segment is designed to help spouses realize that even though needs of the military must come first- the needs of their military family do not have to come last.
Each table of spouses at MilSpouseFest are tasked with working together to find a solution to real-life scenarios, just as NMFA’s founding mothers did years ago. In 1969, a handful of military wives sat around a table determined to make sure their widowed friends were properly taken care of. Two short years later, the Survivor Benefit Plan became law, and NMFA has been hard at work ever since.
The parallels between NMFA’s founding mothers and the attendees at MilSpouse Fest empowered the groups as they worked together; inspiring them to see that they too could become agents of change. One spouse, who is part of a blended military family, said with tears in her eyes, “I used to think there wasn’t much we could do as parents since my husband’s children live with their mother in another state. Thank you for helping me realize we can still advocate for them even if we aren’t physically there every day”.
Military spouses, thank you for all you do! We know you are #MoreThanASpouse and love the opportunity to support you in your dreams.
See you at the next MilSpouseFest in Fort Campbell, Kentucky September 27 and Quantico, Virginia November 29!
