The National Military Family Association Joins Coalition Calling for Protection of the Commissary Benefit
The National Military Family Association, as a member of the Coalition to Save Our Military Shopping Benefits, has signed on to a letter to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel urging him to protect the commissary benefit for service members and their families. Our Association agrees with the other members of the Coalition that commissaries are an important part of the military pay and benefits package and contribute to military families’ quality of life. Cutting the commissary budget, as some Department of Defense officials have proposed, would lead to higher prices and the closure of some smaller stores, increasing costs for military families.
The average family of four who shops at the commissary regularly saves more than $4,400 per year. Cutting the commissary benefit is effectively a cut in military pay. In addition, it is important to remember that the commissary employs many retirees and military family members. We are concerned about the effect that commissary budget reductions will have on military families’ financial well-being. Balancing the budget and managing our financial crisis can and should be done without military families having to sacrifice a valuable earned benefit.
Until military families are relieved of the weight of war, we hope you will continue to contribute to their wellbeing.
