Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner Supporting Military Families’ Commissary Benefits

Food shopping in commissary

On December 13, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) sent a letter to President Obama urging him to carefully consider any proposals to close stateside commissaries. The Senators reminded the President of his previous comments about the importance of the commissary benefit for military families. They emphasized the many benefits and efficiencies the commissary system provides at little cost to the government. We are grateful for their leadership and outreach on this issue.

Closing stateside commissaries would have far reaching consequences, including job losses for military family members and the disabled and increased costs for critical provisions to service members. The National Military Family Association believes that the commissary is more than just a benefit, but a vital program that assists service members, retirees, survivors, and family members in multiple ways. Closing stateside commissaries would leave a gap in services for military families that would have unquantifiable costs to the military community. We don’t think that it is a cost-saving budget measure and we will continue to advocate for what we see as a vital military program. We hope that more Senators and Representatives will speak up and stand beside us in our efforts to preserve the commissary benefit.
