Is Mentoring Right for You?
In recent years, many organizations have expanded their programs to provide mentoring services to veterans and military families. Through a mentoring program, individuals are paired with another person who can offer advice, guidance, and experience-based recommendations. Several organizations are offering mentoring programs for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses.
Take some time to explore each program. Some mentoring programs require a specific time commitment or another metric requirement in order for the relationship to be beneficial to each participant. Some programs require participants to meet face-to-face and others support a virtual format. No two programs are alike. With a bit of research, you can find the right program fit for you.
Examples of mentoring programs focused on veterans and military spouses include the following:
- Business and Professional Women’s Foundation (BPW) provides mentoring, jobs, and resources for women veterans and military spouses with its program Joining Forces for Women Veterans and Military Spouses Mentoring Plus™.
- MilSpouse eMentor Program is an online community where military spouses can receive personalized career guidance, advice, support and inspiration from more experienced military spouses, career mentors, and military spouse friendly employers.
- AcademyWomen eMentor Leadership Program is open to all women officers, officers-in-training, officer reservists, and officer veterans of the U.S. military services. Commissioned men in leadership positions and GS15 and above Civil Service professionals may also participate as mentors only. This program ensures that women who have gone through military officer training have the opportunity to benefit from a mentor who shares this common history.
- America’s Heroes at Work provides promising practices for supporting employees with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
