Shutdown’s Over – What’s Next for Military Families?

The National Military Family Association is not alone in asserting the shutdown was an American disaster, affecting us all. Standard and Poors estimated the cost of the shutdown as at least $24 billion. Sadly, the legislative deal passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on October 17, will fund the government only until January 15 and extend the debt limit through February 7. (More)
The Military Coalition Leads Call to End the Shutdown

President Signs Bill to Restore DoD Death Benefits for Survivors

By unanimous consent on Thursday, October 10, the Senate passed a measure allowing the government to pay death gratuity and burial benefits to the families of people who have died on active duty since October 1 despite the government shutdown. (More)
Honoring the Top Employers of National Guard and Reserve Members

In a ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington D.C. on September 26, fifteen companies and organizations were honored with a Secretary of Defense-level award for their outstanding support of employees serving in the National Guard or Reserve.
Stateside Commissaries Reopened!

Saturday, October 5, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel issued a memo stating that civilian employees who contribute to the morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness of service members would be recalled from furlough. This resulted in commissaries being reopened at stateside locations. (More)
