Commissaries to Scan IDs at Checkout

Starting on November 10, commissary customers will notice a new step at checkout. On that date, commissaries will begin scanning customers’ military ID cards as part of the checkout process. The scan, which will not collect any personal identifying information, is designed to improve commissary customers’ shopping experience. By cross-referencing information on purchases with demographic data on the ID card, the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) will be better able to identify shopping needs and preferences, as well as provide more data on commissary usage. The new process will also enhance security since stores will no longer have to keep customers’ personal information on file for writing checks.
