A Safe Place for Our Kids is Expected
We find the allegations of abusive behavior by staffers at the Fort Myer Child Development Center appalling. Additional reports that more than thirty CDC staff members have criminal records are extremely concerning. The safety of our military children must be our highest priority.
While military child development centers have been recognized among the best in the Nation, the Department of Defense must not lessen its vigilance when hiring those who care for our kids.
We commend Secretary Panetta for addressing the situation and applaud him for broadening his investigation to include hiring practices at schools, teen centers, and any facilities serving military children at all installations worldwide. We urge him to act decisively to ensure that military children receive quality care in a safe environment. We owe our children nothing less.
