Applications for Operation PurpleĀ® Camps Are Open for One Month, Starting Today!

February 24, 2014

National Military Family Association, a nonprofit that works to strengthen and protect military families, announced today that they are accepting applications for their Operation Purple summer camps. The free camps were created more than 10 years ago to give kids dealing with deployed parents some stress relief by providing a comfortable and fun environment away from their daily lives.

“These camps were a natural extension of what we were already doing,” said Joyce Raezer, Executive Director of the National Military Family Association. “Deployments are hard on military families, and these camps connect kids who are going through the same situation so they know they’re not alone.”

Operation Purple Camp is just as much about fun as it is stress relief. The kids ride horses, dive down water slides and climb towers—all to help take their mind off things and enjoy the summer.

“Of course these kids are hurting after more than a decade of war,” said Raezer. “These camps are a place they can feel safe and understood—and also have an adventure!"

Camps sessions are one week long and are available for kids ages 7-17 who belong to active duty, National Guard or Reserve service members from the seven uniformed services.

This year, more than 1,000 children will attend camp in one of the following locations: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia.

The application period ends March 24th. More information about the camp program, including specific locations and dates is available on the Association’s website.
